Get ready to be taken to church with the smash hit comedy, “Sister Act” that is to be the senior show for Bridgeport High this school year. This show reflects a lot of the slapstick humor, quick wit, and powerful music played in Whoopi Goldberg’s 1992, top selling movie. Though, Director Gregg Brown points out, “It has a great score but, it is not the same as the movie. Mrs. Alice Rowe and I decided that “Sister Act” will be a wonderful experience and opportunity for the kids. I believe that they will have a lot of fun with it.” Brown and the 2018 seniors are gearing up for the show’s auditions which will be this Saturday, August 26, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Green Room behind the BHS auditorium.

For individuals not familiar or do not remember the film, “This show is about a woman hiding in a convent, and she helps fellow nuns find their own personality and find themselves as individuals, many for the first time,” said Brown.

In response to the selection of the show, theatre teacher, Mr. Jared Saint Martin Brown said, “It was a surprise, but a nice surprise.  The director chose it because he believes in it, and I like to work with a director who is excited about the show.”

The director further elaborated on his hopes for this weekend and the show in general with great optimism, “We really need at least five or six boys for a mob, though we would love to have as many as we can. I really believe this will be a fun and different experience for them, something that they and their peers will enjoy. For the girls especially and really everybody has to be able to really sing and or at least want to improve or work really hard at their singing. I am looking for a variety of women to play nuns and fill the choir and many of the leads.”

Though, others auditioning have some concerns, “I hope that we can get enough seniors to try out so that it truly can be a senior show. I really am hopeful that enough of my class will come out and participate. I remember the senior class last year had struggled with it and did not end up being able to have a true senior show, which was really a bummer. Every day I keep pushing my friends little by little to try out, and I believe that they will eventually come around to signing up,” said senior student, Samuel Cale.

Overall, the response from the student body has been very positive, “I am looking forward to it so much! I am glad that we are doing a comedy like this this year because I think our class can pull it off really well. The play itself is sort of a wild ride, and I think it is going to turn out to be amazing with the seniors we have. Our class is really involved and if they get into the spirit of the roles and the characters they are casting us as, I believe we are going to have a huge amount of energy and great performances to present to the public,” said Megan Rinker.

Building on that, fellow senior Isabella Hawkinberry said, “I am really happy with the choice; it is a great show choice! There is a lovely story and great characterization that goes into this show. We also will be having a lot of opportunities for fun musical numbers and humor. I think the senior group we have is going to really have a good time with this show.”

“If someone is unable to make it to the whole audition due at another school activity, I'd suggest showing up a little late.  We just need to have everyone heard by the music director, and seen by the choreographer, and they will both be there on Saturday, said Saint Martin Brown. It is pertinent that a plethora of senior’s audition for this show in order for Bridgeport to be able to carry the tradition of performing a senior class show. This musical is projected to be ready for public viewing on October 27, 28, and 29, 2017 at Bridgeport High.
