Bridgeport High School Thespian Troupe 7549 made school history in Charleston this weekend by taking first place in the State Thespian Festival's one act competition.

Out of 16 performances, the troupe’s show, “Sing Down the Moon” was selected to represent West Virginia at the International Thespian Festival, this June in Nebraska.

Under the direction of Jared St. Martin Brown and Jason Young, the troupe was also awarded a $10,000 grant.

“This is the first time in school history that they ever got to compete at the state festival - let alone win,” said Anita Cottrill, parent/chaperone. “The kids are on cloud nine!”

Additional accolades were as follows: Aaron Harris and Bekah James, All-Festival Cast; Bekah James, Top Five Musical Solo; Hannah Cottrill and Aaron Harris, Top Five Musical Duet for their performance of a duet from “Phantom of the Opera” and the entire BHS Thespian Troupe, Quadruple Threat Award for singing, acting, instrument playing and dancing.

The festival took place Thursday through Saturday at the West Virginia Cultural Center.
