Brains Plus Beauty: BHS Grad Passes Bar Exam and Publishes Beauty Blog

A graduate of Bridgeport High School and Stetson University College of Law, Sarah Jafri recently experienced two major personal milestones: She passed her bar exam in the state of Ohio and she launched a beauty blog.

While she pursues a career in criminal defense, she’s happy to share her passion for beauty products, and skincare through her WordPress.com blog, “La Maeve Fae,” which translated means “The Queen Fairy.” Jafri explains her choice.

“I chose this because I thought it was elegant and chic, holds a special place in my heart – and is a nod to Shakespeare.”

She said she wanted a name that was creative, yet personal.

“My friend (Megan) from law school has always called me her ‘mischievous fairy,” Jafri said. “I mentioned that to another friend (Angel) and she reminded me that in ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ the queen fairy’s name is Mauve Fae. I did some research and her character is in many stories.”

Jafri is pegged by her friends as their go-to girl for cosmetic and beauty advice.

“Sarah has been my beauty guru since high school. She was always ahead of her time with makeup and beauty,” said Dareth Murphy. “I’ve seen her encourage and give tips to so many of her friends, so we all knew she would be amazing as a beauty blogger.”

Murphy said Jafri’s timing is great, with the present popularity of YouTube tutorials, Pinterest and other social media outlets. Although she feels some bloggers and vloggers make it all look intimidating, Jafri has an effective approach.

“Sarah knows how to simplify and explain her tips and tricks so that anyone can benefit and learn a thing or two,” she said.

Jafri said all girls seek the airbrushed, flawless makeup look they see on the runway or in magazines.

While that’s nearly impossible to achieve – because the makeup is professionally applied and the photos are airbrushed – everyone can have healthy, glowing skin  by pursuing a regular skincare routine, eating lots of fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water.

“It’s always easier to start from the inside out, than it is to try to cover up something,” she said.

Jafri said she wants readers to learn from her content.

“I love helping people with their skincare and makeup products. Because I've had a lot of practice and trial and error, I want to help people choose the right products, versus them trying several products before they find the right one,” she said. “I know firsthand how frustrating that is, not to mention time consuming and expensive.”

Jafri said she is always trying new products and techniques - and always lets her friends know what works best and what doesn’t.

“I remember specific concerns each friend has and if I notice something that would work or a product they would like, I immediately share that information with them,” she said.

Jafri has always loved makeup. Through the years, she has experimented, creating different looks.

“The more I practiced, the more I fell in love with it,” she said. “It’s a great way to express yourself.”

Since she graduated from BHS in 2006, Jafri’s own beauty regimen has changed a lot – and for the better.

“I never routinely washed my face, I slept in my makeup. I was terrible,” she said. “I'm on much more of a routine now.”

That routine includes washing her face day and night, using a toner and applying repair cream during the colder months to keep her skin hydrated.

During the past 10 years, she has learned a lot about skincare, products and makeup application. That knowledge has been gained through personal experience and trial and error, from aestheticians and, of course, by watching lots of YouTube videos. Jafri said she loves the connection the beauty bloggers have with their viewers and the fact that they all share a common interest.

She said she has wanted to start a beauty blog for over a year and with encouragement of her closest friends, finally made it happen. Even though there are thousands of other beauty bloggers out there, she feels she has something unique to offer.

“I noticed there isn't a huge number of South Asian beauty bloggers and I want to reach out to that culture,” she said. “It's much different applying makeup on darker skin tones than light skin tones.”

In her blog, Jafri offers to try specific products and share her findings.

As beauty products are designed for specific skin types, product reviews are huge in the beauty world – offering real-world insight, she said. A product review posted by a blogger with the same skin type – be it oily or dry skin – can provide a prospective purchaser with a wealth of information, thereby saving that purchaser time and money.

Murphy said she cannot wait to hear about Jafri’s latest purchases, and which products she would recommend for her particular skin color and/or type.

Jafri said it is likely that she will start her own makeup tutorials on YouTube in early 2016.

“I don't have the appropriate equipment for that at the moment - and it can get expensive,” she said. “You need ample lighting, along with a decent recorder. I think I might ask for those for a Christmas present.”

For the meantime, she said she prefers to focus on writing posts until she can create clear, vivid, easy-to-follow tutorials targeting young professionals.

“I've seen a lot of professionals who don't wear a lot of makeup - which is totally fine - or they wear neutral makeup that isn't applied correctly,” she said. “I want to show them that you can get creative with your makeup, yet keep it simple and chic at the same time."

Jafri said she is taking baby steps, creating her blog and posting consistently.

“This girl has a gifted hobby - and is beautiful inside and out,” Murphy said.

Jafri clerked for the Franklin County Public Defender Office in Columbus, Ohio during the summer of 2014. That work reinforced her passion for public defense and offering counsel to individuals who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford an attorney. She presently works as a receptionist at European Wax Center in Columbus.
