Bridgeport High School Student Brooke Shull's Art to be Displayed at United States Capitol

The dictionary defines an artist as someone having superior skill or ability.  By that definition, Brooke Shull is most definitely an artist.  Those who have known her talents, however, don’t need a dictionary to tell them of her talents.  Having proven herself first at the local level, then being chosen for several state art shows, Shull recently showed she has what it takes to go to the national level as well.

On Feb. 28, Shull and her family traveled to Parkersburg, where she received First Place at the WVAEA Youth Art event for her painting, “Selfie.”  From there, she will be a featured artist in Arts Alive, a premier showcase of top artists from around the state that will be held in Charleston next month.

Shull also had the distinct honor of placing first in the district for the Congressional Art Competition in Charleston, held at the Cultural Center.  This unique opportunity will allow her painting, “Garden of Heathen,” to be on display at the United States Capital for a full year.

“This is so exciting,” said Shull.  “The gift of art has been in my family for three generations.  It is something I don’t take for granted and to have it recognized at a national level is both humbling and inspiring.  I pour my heart and soul into my works and the fact that it is being validated in such a way absolutely thrills me.”

Tours will be available of the display at the United States Capital after the painting is removed from the Cultural Center next month.  Shull’s Advanced Placement Art Teacher, Carolyn Light, of Lincoln High School, is equally thrilled for Shull.

“She is a remarkable artist and she deserves to be featured among the best artists in the country,” said Light.
