Formerly of Bridgeport, Katelyn Read Has Successful Audition for "The Voice"

By Julie Perine on February 21, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Update: Katelyn Read shared the following post on her Facebook page Feb. 23:

“The Voice premieres tonight! It starts at 8/7c on NBC and is two hours long this evening. The show is two nights a week -  Monday and Tuesday - and there are at least two weeks of blind auditions (and we don't know which one I am on, so just keep tuning in if you don't see me this week),” she said. “Some auditions will be shown in their full length with some background and interviews about the artist, and some will be montaged into short clips just showing a few seconds of singing and whose team they made. (Let's hope I'm not montaged!!  Lastly, you're going to love it! If you've never watched the show before, I promise it will be fun. Thank you all so very much for your generous love and support! I'll be watching right along with you tonight.”

If you tune into the new season of “The Voice,” keep your eyes and ears open for Katelyn Dye Read. Formerly of Bridgeport, Read now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband and daughter. There, she pursues singing and songwriting, performing with her band in regional venues. With musical influences including The Civil Wars, Amos Lee, Gungor and Billie Holiday, Read’s sound blends folk melodies with a hint of blues and soul. She was recently featured on Aaron Gallagher’s recording of a live version of his original, “Broken.” (See music video below.)  Read’s own album, "She Can Feel It," is available on iTunes.

Read, her parents Sherman and Kathy Dye, brother Nathan and sister Allison left Bridgeport in 2000 to relocate to Parkersburg. She graduated from Wood County Christian School in 2007.

The young artist was successful in the preliminary audition process for “The Voice.” Her blind audition will be aired on the show, though it’s not certain which episode.

Season 8 premiers Monday with celebrity coaches Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Pharrell Williams. The show is hosted by Carson Daly.

For the 2015 season, open call auditions were held between late-January and mid-February in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. To participate in the audition process, artists had to prepare two songs by any artist and from any genre, one of which was chosen to be performed A cappella. No background tracks, accompaniment or instruments were allowed. Those who received “red cards” at open auditions advanced to callback auditions where he or she had to prepare three current/popular songs and perform one of the producer’s choice. This time, auditioning artists were required to use accompaniment – either a track or instrument.

The show’s format, according to publicist Joanna Chin, features five stages of competition, starting with the blind auditions during which decisions from the coaches are based only on voice. The coaches hear the artists perform, but they don't get to see them - thanks to rotating chairs. If a coach is impressed by the artist's voice, he/she pushes a button to select the artist for his/her team. At this point, the coach's chair will swivel so that he/she can face the artist he/she has selected. If more than one coach pushes his/her button, the power then shifts to the artists to choose which coach they want to work with. If no coach pushes his/her button, the artist is eliminated from the competition.

If Read  makes it past the blind auditions, she will advance to the Battle Rounds, the Knockouts, the Live Playoffs and the final phase of competition, the Live Performance Shows. In that final round, the top 12 artists compete weekly during a live broadcast and the TV audience votes to save their favorites. The two vocalists with the lowest number of votes are sent home each week. The remaining artist is named “The Voice” and receives the grand prize of a recording contract.

“The Voice" is a presentation of United Artists Media Group (an MGM company), Talpa Media USA Inc. and Warner Horizon Television.
