The Arts took center stage at Harrison County Schools Annual Kick-Off for teachers, held at the Nathan Goff Armory in Clarksburg on August 11.  Each year, Superintendent Mark Manchin showcases student success stories from schools throughout the county and this year was no exception.

The roads were filled with busses Thursday morning, but the passengers were not early bird students. Instead, they were teachers and staff from all the schools in the county, along with Harrison County Schools personnel and board members.  As they arrived, the guests were treated to  the sights and sounds of Robert C. Byrd’s High School Band.

Dr. Manchin welcomed the crowd, pointing out the importance of each profession within the educational system.

“We are here to celebrate the beginning of school,” he said.  “We each contribute to the success of the children in our schools and we must work together to ensure school is a positive experience for each of them.”

After the Robert C. Byrd ROTC presented the colors, the crowd said the Pledge of Allegiance along with Chloe Sizemore of Norwood Elementary and Natalie Ward of Johnson Elementary.

Giana Loretta, a sophomore from Lincoln High School sang a spectacular rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.

Several members of the Board of Education greeted guests and  acknowledged the stress associated with the beginning of school. They praised teachers for their dedication and challenged them to be innovative and resilient throughout the year, noting that they inspire countless children every day.

The Bridgeport High School Jazz Band started off the showcase for the arts, performing two songs that inspired Dr. Manchin to jump out of his seat and start dancing with Carolyn Light, the art teacher at Lincoln High School.  The crowd loved the impromptu display and could appreciate the enthusiasm with which the music was embraced.

Performing and visual arts were performed throughout the morning, featuring the talented Karmendi Fratt, a fourth grader from Nutter Fort Intermediate.  Those attending last year’s school opening event were thrilled to have her return again this year and show off her impressive speaking and dance skills.  “Everyone has an important role in education,” she said, noting that her teachers’ encouragement and support has been vital to her succeeding in school.

Harrison County School’s own Todd Poole surprised the crowd by performing with his father, singing “Pretty Woman,” complete with the signature growl.  At the end of the event, he had the whole audience singing along to “Proud to be an American” and proved his skills go way beyond the computer realm.

Four Lincoln High School students spoke about the importance of the arts in their lives. Whether it be performing arts, visual arts, or creative writing, each of them had aspirations that began with the encouragement of teacher Carolyn Light.  “She makes us want to be the best versions of ourselves,” said Erin Huffman.  Bridgeport High School graduate, Brook Shull, echoed the sentiments, saying that without excellent teachers, she would not have had the opportunities to excel in art.

Lastly, BHS Senior Hannah Dunn and Johnston Elementary Third Grader Anthony Ward honored the teachers who have made a difference in their lives.  Dunn, who endured a personal tragedy early on in high school, praised band directory Chris Hayslette for going above and beyond during her difficult time. Ward noted that many members of his family are employed by Harrison County Schools and he acknowledged how hard they work to make sure the students are safe and cared for.

Manchin wrapped up the opening event by stressing to school personnel what a difference each of them can make when they enter their schools next week. “You may not know the impact for years to come, but rest assured, you have inspired, educated, encouraged and enlightened the young people to which you have dedicated your lives and it is very much appreciated,” he said.
