Let's Paint: Kids! Summer Camp Kicks off at Benedum Civic Center; Another Session is Scheduled for July

By Julie Perine on June 15, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport Parks & Recreation's very first "Let's Paint: Kids! Summer Camp" kicked off today at Benedum Civic Center. Centering around a SpongeBob theme, the four-day paint and craft class is being taught by Brenda Smith. Five children registered for the first session. Today's activities included the crafting of a SpongeBob apron and square stained glass lamp.

The crafters will also be painting on canvas, as well as taking part in creative games and activities. Slated, Smith said, is the creation of a jellyfish and a seashell hunt. She said activities are designed to teach children basic crafting and painting techniques in a fun, hands-on environment. Acrylic paints are being used on various mediums.

Classes are taking place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Thursday. Each day of activity will include snack time. On today's menu and served at the makeshift "Krusty Krab" were SpongeBob chunks, krabby patties, SpongeBob pushups and jellyfish juice. Projects will be on display during the camp's final day so parents and other guests can see what the kids learned and created.

A second session will be held July 20-23, featuring similar activities surrounding a theme from the popular movie, "Despicable Me." Among projects will be the painting of Minions - both boys and girls. Children in grades two and up are invited to register for the second session.

The cost is $110 per session. Campers can register by calling 304-842-8240 or stopping at the Benedum Civic Center office.
