"Seussical the Musical" Coming to BHS Stage; Second Audition Taking Place

Bridgeport High School Theatre is holding a second audition for the 2020 all-school play, “Seussical the Musical.”

Interested students can audition 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5 at the BHS auditorium and green room. The first round of auditions was held Dec. 16.

“So many students were sick with the flu the week leading up to the holiday,” said Jared St. Martin Brown of BHS Theatre. “(Those casting the play) just wanted to make sure that every student who wanted to be in ‘Seussical’ had the opportunity to try out.”

Casting the play – including roles of Horton, Gertrude McFuzz, Grinch, Mrs. Mayor, Cindy Lou Who and many others - will be Jennifer Hess, Josh Stubbs and show director, Trina Byard. The show should be a fun one for those on stage and in the audience.
“There are at least a couple dozen Seuss stories interwoven into a fun musical that has a lot of heart,” Brown said. “It is very entertaining for all ages.”

Auditions will consist of a musical/singing audition, some book reading and a basic choreography audition. Those auditioning are asked to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. Audition preparation packets consisting of an audition form, sample script readings and audition music should be picked up at the box office in the theater lobby prior to the audition day. All 2019-2020 BHS students may audition.
There are also some roles for interested Bridgeport Middle School students.

Any BHS student interested in serving on the tech crew may sign up on the list hanging on the bulletin board in the theater lobby. Those interested in specific mentored positions - stage manager, assistant director, costume designer, music director - should contact Trina Byard or pick up an application at the BHS theater box office.
BHS Theatre Makeup Artist Rachel Griffith said she is looking forward to working on this whimsical show and is already preparing.

“First, I source images of each character for examples, inspiration, etc., then I use crayons to color in a blank face chart in the way I’d like the characters to look,” she said. “I list out the products and techniques needed for the face, eyes and lips.”

The face charts, Griffith said, help her make shopping lists so she knows exactly what she needs for the production.

“Seussical the Musical” will be presented on the BHS stage April 2-5 with evening performances April 2-4 and an afternoon matinee on April 5.
