Simpson Elementary Continues Efforts to Raise Funds for Instruments

“Old Lang Syne” may have rung in the New Year, but the truth is music is part of everyday life for most of us.  Christmas carols, Happy Birthday, even singing in the shower all started with a simple note.  Simpson Elementary Music Teacher Jason Noland is hoping to inspire students to create some music of their own by introducing them to the Orff Melodic Percussion Instruments.

In April, Connect-Bridgeport announced the launch of the fundraising program to buy the instruments.  The goal at that time, was to raiser nearly $13,000 in order to buy a basic set of 18 instruments for the musical program at Simpson Elementary.  Since then, Bandland of Clarksburg has offered to sell the set for a reduced price of $11,976, a significant savings. In addition, the fundraising program has raised $2445 toward its goal.

“The Orff Program is a staple in elementary music education,” said Noland.  “It’s ideal for small musicians and teaches self discipline, social skills, improvisation and simple patterns in addition to music.”

Noland got the idea for addition after attending a conference in which he was able to see an ensemble group of elementary students from Tyler County perform.

“The students made such beautiful music and were featured performers at last year’s Arts Alive program in Charleston.  I thought it would be such a great opportunity for our students to have that kind of exposure as well,” he said.

Over the summer, Noland attended a two-week training on teaching using the Orff instruments and came back even more enthused about the possibilities locally.

“Next year, I would like to start an after school ensemble.  The students could use these instruments to perform at community events in addition to their classroom pursuits,” Noland said.

At Simpson Elementary, the instruments would be used for all five grade levels and create a smoother transition to band classes at Bridgeport Middle School.

Noland hopes to buy the initial set of 18 instruments as soon as possible in order to prepare for the upcoming ensemble as well as the introduction into the music classes at the school.

“A small investment can make a big difference for the students and we are asking individuals as well as local businesses to consider donating to the fundraising efforts,” he said.

Anyone interested in donating may contact Noland at 304-326-7060.
