Still Room in "Let's Paint the Town" Class Debut; Another Design Added to Mix

By Julie Perine on October 02, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

There is still room in Friday's "Let's Paint the Town" group paint class debut at Benedum Civic Center. The featured design is "Cats in a Tree."

The paint class series is brand new to Bridgeport Parks and Recreation's class offerings.  Teaching is Brenda Smith, who approached Parks and Recreation staff with the idea.

Deputy Director Joe Shuttleworth said Smith’s class is a welcome addition to the program.

“It’s something neat – a real trendy type thing right now, which is popular around the country,” he said. “It’s great for mothers and daughters, girls’ night out or for couples.”

And the real draw, Shuttleworth said, is that class participants need no artistic skill or experience.

“They will leave with a really nice painting and for some designs, Brenda will even customize it,” he said.

Primarily a self-taught artist, Smith works with the after-school program at Cubby’s Child Care, where she has dabbled in various arts and crafts projects with the children.

This past summer, she offered a paint-on-canvas class there which was very well received. Her series there featured various Minion creations from the popular movie, “Despicable Me 2.” It all went so well with the kids that she decided to offer some adult classes, too.

Bridgeport Parks and Recreation seemed to be the perfect outlet.

The first class, “Cats in a Tree,” will be offered 6-9 p.m. Oct. 3.

"Halloween Cats” design will be offered as follows:

Kids (2nd grade and up) 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 11

Adults 6-9 p.m. Oct. 17.
Mommy and Me (children age 3 and up) 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 25.

An adult class for “Pumpkin in Moonlight” will be taught 6-9 p.m. Nov. 8.

"Thanksgiving Turkey" for kids (2nd grade and up) 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 15.

The series will wind up with “Christmas Trees:”

Adults 6-9 p.m. Dec. 5.

Kids (2nd grade and up) 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 13

All classes will be taught at the Benedum Civic Center. Smith said the class will be a relaxing social setting and participants will leave with a 16 x 20-inch acrylic on canvas personal masterpiece.

Price is $25 per class and includes all materials and guided instruction.

To register, call Bridgeport Parks and Recreation 304-842-8240 or stop by the office, located in the Benedum Civic Center, 515 West Main Street.
