"The Voice" Season 9 Winner Jordan Smith Bringing "Something Beautiful Tour" to WVU CAC

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 04, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Jordan Smith shared his musical gift with the world when he won Season 9 of the popular NBC series “The Voice.” He will share that same gift with Morgantown Oct. 30 when he brings his “Something Beautiful Tour” to the WVU Creative Arts Center as part of the University Toyota University Arts Series. Showtime is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at the Mountainlair and CAC box offices and online at Ticketmaster.com.

“It’s extremely important for me to let everyone know it’s OK to be different,” Smith affirms. “I feel like it’s taken a long time for me to love different parts of myself. The world is hurting and searching, because we think there are flawed parts of who we are. It’s important to accept yourself and have confidence, and then you can love others.”

Jordan’s honesty made history. Not only did he cement himself as “The Voice’s” biggest seller – selling 1.5 million singles in six months – but he launched eight songs into the iTunes Top 10. Smith was the first artist from any season to land in the iTunes Top 10 in every week of the Live Rounds.

Smith’s success didn’t end there. He is also the first act to concurrently own both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart. Now Smith is sharing his message of honesty with the world through the songs on his debut album on Republic Records/LightWorkers Records, “Something Beautiful.”

Jordan hails from Harlan, Kentucky – “a close town where everyone knows everyone.” Surrounded by music at home, he constantly sang with his family, whether he was harmonizing in the car with his mom or singing in the church choir. Smith fell in love with the music of gospel singer Shirley Caesar, pop songstress Sara Bareilles, the legendary Whitney Houston and many others whose diversity would influence his own sound and style.

Smith began working on “Something Beautiful” after “The Voice” concluded. He collaborated with Grammy-winning producer David Foster who has also worked with Céline Dion, Michael Bublé and Josh Groban. Academy Award nominee and songwriter Stephan Moccio (The Weeknd, Céline Dion) and Grammy-winning artist and writer Kirk Franklin (Gladys Knight, John Tesh) were also integral parts of the album.

Jordan’s robust delivery breathes a new kind of soul into the timeless classics “Over the Rainbow” and “Amazing Grace.” The album also includes covers of Maroon 5’s “Love Somebody,” Florence + the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” and Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” but Jordan’s voice really shines on the original material. The first single “Stand in the Light” has an uplifting message in is refrain – “This is who I am inside. This is who I am; I’m not gonna hide.” The lyrics are showcased in the warm backdrop of violin, piano and guitar.

Tickets for Jordan Smith’s concert at the Creative Arts Center start at $33. WVU Student tickets are $18. Tickets are on sale now at the Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices, Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 304-293-SHOW (7469) or 800-745-3000.
