WVU Dance Team Hosting Day Camp for Aspiring Dancers

By Julie Perine on January 13, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Featuring instruction by the West Virginia University Dance Team, a dance camp will be held Sunday, Feb. 1. Beginning at 10 a.m., the camp will be held at the WVU Shell Building, located just behind the WVU Coliseum. Following the camp, participants will perform at the 2 p.m. WVU women's basketball game against Oklahoma.

"We hold children's camp once a year to raise money towards our trip to Daytona Beach, Fla.for NDA Nationals and also to give boys and girls a chance to experience what it is like to be a WVU Dance Team member," said Kallie Nealis, dance team member and BHS graduate. "Attending the camp is a perfect opportunity to allow dancers from the area to really get an inside look on what it would be like to be part of the team."

First-year team member Chiara Pulice, also an alum of BHS, said she is excited to share the day with aspiring dance team members.

"It's going to give them a day in the life of a WVU Dance Team member. It's not every day that you get the chance to perform in front of over 1,000 people. The camp is going to be a fun-filled day of dance, laughs and making new friends!"

Cost is $40 if pre-registered by Jan. 23. If availability still remains, camp day registration will be available for $45.

At the camp, participants will work on dance and jumps, learn the WVU Fight Song and a timeout dance. Each young aspiring dancer will receive a WVU Dance Team T-shirt and two tickets for the WVU vs. Oklahoma Women's basketball game, to take place at the WVU Coliseum.

Just last year, dance line member Danielle Walden took part in the camp, participating in the advanced level. This year, she is a member of the team.

"The whole day is what made me fall in love with dance team, thus leading me to my final decision to try out! I hope to see some girls come out and love the experience just as much as I did, and who knows? Maybe next year they'll be helping to run it like me," she said.
