By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 01, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Evangel Baptist Church is proud to be celebrating 60 years of ministry June 7-8, and with the celebration, they are bringing a little bit of the Shenandoah Valley to Bridgeport.

Saturday, June 7, 2014, The PromisedLand Quartet will be in concert at the church on Airport Road at 6 PM.  Formed in January of 2000, PromisedLand is based in Edinburg, Va., and travels spreading the Word of God with more than 120 concert dates per year, across the nation.  They have had radio and chart success with songs like: Brand New Heart, In the Morning, Joy's Gonna Come, Crown Him King, Gods Word Will Stand, and Carved in Stone.  They were nominated for a Dove Award for Album of the Year in 2008 for their project, Carved in Stone.  Audiences say the group’s off stage love and accessibility are the things they appreciate most about PromisedLand. Most recently, the group appeared on Christian TV via the Daystar Network NRB Network, World Harvest, and Gospel Music Television, making multiple appearances on Great American Gospel and Great American Gospel Onstage.

Group members include Gene Hamman from Edinburg, Va., on lead vocal as well as sound engineer and tour manager.  Joey Wilson from Warrenton, Va., is a tenor and the producer, arranger, and product manager for PLQ.  Baritone Nathan Potts is from Hopewell, Va., and lends his talents on bass guitar.  Providing the low tones, KC Armstrong from Winchester, Va., adds in bass vocal, while Aaron Fields from Springfield, W.Va., adds his talents on piano and keyboards.

The concert is free, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend this special weekend of activities commemorating Evangel Baptists’ 60 years of ministry in the Bridgeport community.  Many events are planned, but one of the highlights will be third generation pastor Philip William “Phil” Horne III, presenting the keynote sermon and special music.  Horne’s grandfather, Philip W. Horne, was the founding pastor of the church.  The elder Horne was very active in the Bridgeport community during his tenure at Evangel, and is widely remembered for his live “Voice of Faith” radio broadcasts on WHAR.  Reverend Philip Horne’s son, Thomas P. Horne, will also take part in ceremonies, as will current Evangel Baptist Pastor Jeffrey Ramsey.  Reverend Thomas Horne is currently the pastor at Bridgeport’s Lifeway BIBLE Fellowship Church.

Events will kick off on Saturday, June 7 at 3 PM with a time of sharing and fellowship.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their old photos, stories, and memories to share.  The concert featuring PromisedLand starts at 6 PM.  Sunday’s morning service at 10:45 AM on June 8 will conclude the weekend’s festivities.  For more information, please contact Ginny Horne Knight at (304) 623-3268 or Carol Knight Blackwell at (304) 842-2559.
