Second Annual SCBC Block Party Draws Hundreds; Doubles as Fundraiser for Southern Flood Victims

The parking lot of the Simpson Creek Baptist Church community building featured a very festive atmosphere Sunday evening as about 350 adults and children enjoyed a community block party. The second annual event came along with a two-fold blessing, said Misty Miller of SCBC.

“Basically, we just want the community to know we are here and that we invite them to come to our church and be part of our church. It’s probably geared toward kids, but honestly we had all ages. Entire families came out and enjoyed themselves,” she said. “And the weather was perfect. All week long, there was about a 90 percent chance of rain forecast, but it turned out to be beautiful.”

Among featured activities were carnival games, a rock climbing wall and Cartoon Headquarters’ mechanical bull – which was a big hit, Miller said.
“We also gave away over 300 hot-dogs and free snow cones and popcorn too,” she said.

Bridgeport Fire Department obliged in bringing a ladder truck so area kids could get an up-close-and-personal look, Miller said. The littlest attendees also enjoyed a bubble-blowing station and sidewalk chalk activities.

Old-fashioned carnival games included duck pond, fish pond and a dime pitch, the latter event doubling as a fundraiser.
“We raised about $70 for southern West Virginia flood victims,” Miller said.

Many volunteers from the church worked hard to make the event a success. This year’s church-sponsored block party and was bigger than the inaugural event in 2015.

“We’re going to try to do even more next year. Hopefully, our new building will be complete by then,” said Miller of the church’s expansion project which is underway.
