City Faces in Different Places

By Julie Perine on May 10, 2020 from City Faces via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms out there, including my own mother – and today’s City Face - Shirley (Cook) Hadorn.

She, my dad Bill, my younger sister Janet (Mrs. Jeff Hathaway) and I moved here from Wheeling in 1968. My dad, who was a salesman for Weimer Packing Co., was transferred here.

They have four grandsons: B.R. Hathaway (and wife Jenn), Jeffrey Perine, Brett Hathaway and Jacob Perine; three granddaughters Deanna (Perine) Garrett (and husband Gary), Brittany (Perine) McQuaid (and husband Andrew) and Natalie Hathaway; and seven great-grandchildren Della AnnMarie McQuaid, Vienna Garrett, Everly Hathaway, Garrett Garrett, Sloane Hathaway, Anderson McQuaid and Indigo Garrett.

Tell everyone about your pet, Mom ...
We have a long -haired black cat named Rudy

What have you done for a living?
I worked during the 1970s at Bridgeport Bank. After that, I worked for our business, Hadorn Distributing Co. But the best job I ever had was being a mother, grandma and great-grandma.

What are your hobbies/favorite past times?
I have many hobbies: Quilting, ceramics, painting, making porcelain dolls and also rag dolls. I used to have a vegetable garden, but now I just grow flowers.

Favorite Bridgeport spot?
At the present time – home

What do you like about Bridgeport … why is this a good place to live?
It’s a small town and very friendly
One – or more – of your favorite memories of something that took place in Bridgeport ...
Attending any event that children and grandchildren were involved in. We attended many cheerleading, dance and sporting events. We didn't miss many. (Editor’s Note: I can certainly vouch for that!)

It wasn’t a favorite thing, but the tornado was an unforgettable event.

What are some of your favorite things?   My favorite thing is spending time with my family. They are the highlight of my life. We are so blessed with our great-grandchildren and the time we spend with them. I really miss doing that right now.

I also love club work. I belong to GFWC Woman's Club of Bridgeport, The members are my best friends. I have been a member for 28 years.
I also love our annual Groundhog Day party. Our entire family attends. It is a fun family gathering and we’ve been doing so for years.

Food/restaurant? Oliverio's Restaurant. My favorite dessert is strawberry rhubarb pie. (I make my own.)

Favorite color?  Red

Music genre/artist?   I like country music. Some of my favorite artists are Joe Nichols, Brad Paisley ad Blake Shelton, to name a few.

What is your best childhood memory?   Being raised on a farm and going to a one-room school.

Interesting fact about you …
My dad would give me the runt of the litter of pigs.  I would raise it in the house - in my room no less. I fed it with a bottle until it could run with the rest.  They mostly wanted to stay at the house with the other pets, cats and our dog, named Luke. Contrary to most people believe, pigs are very clean.  At least mine were, I bathed them!

Also pictured are Mom's younger sister Cindy and great-nephew Kaden.
