Art Auction Showcases Local Talent

By Trina Runner on March 30, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

I would not want to be debating on the opposite side of Col.  Tom Wolfe.  His powers of persuasion were quite impressive  as he auctioned off original artwork and jewelry at the 4th Annual Cocktails and Creations Art Auction, held at the Bridgeport Conference Center on March 27.  The event was sponsored by The North Central Young Leaders, a division of the Harrison County Chamber of Commerce dedicated to serving the needs of individuals 21-40 years old.

The North Central Young Leaders was formed by a group of young professionals who wanted to become more involved with the community. In addition to fundraising, the group does professional development, networking and community service that benefit local needs. They are also part of Generation WV, a statewide network that showcases young talent across the state.  Their involvement allows them to have input on initiatives such as economic development, community growth, legislation and leadership development.

Four years ago, the Art Auction was started as a way to celebrate local artisans while raising money for local charities.  This year, applications were accepted for potential recipients of the funds.  Because of the success of the Holiday Jazz Stroll last December, which brought over 1000 people to the area, it was decided that the money from this years Art Auction would go to support Clarksburg Uptown’s Summer Jazz Stroll.

The West Virginia Jazz Society has booked  a lineup of artists that will perform in six venues free of charge on June 20.  The venues include the Fifth Floor Lounge, The Blue Bird Store, The Starving Artist, Main Street Café, Kelly’s Pub and Uptown Seafood.

Thursday’s auction included a cocktail reception during which participants could peruse local artists’ creations.  Included were Vicki Angotti of VIttoria and Banks, with her jewelry designs, James and Katherine Crim, Sam Houge, Bill and Amanda Leaseburg, Carolyn Light, Annabelle McCoy, Christy Nicholas, Jeannine Romano, Michael Ray, Gary Sias, Julie Sperry, and Craig Wagoner.  There was also a unique display of vintage clothing and jewelry from one of the regulars at the Bridgeport Farmer’s Market, Quinn LaRoux Edgell.

After dinner, the crowd was led by auctioneer Col. Tom Wolfe, in a spirited live auction of artwork and jewelry donated by the vendors.   A total of around $1200.00 was raised for the cause.  Organizers are pleased with the results and the opportunity to exhibit local talent in such an entertaining event.
