BHS Key Club Wins Top Honors in District

By Trina Runner on April 05, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport High School Key Club totally dominated the West Virginia District Key Club Convention, held in Charleston March 28-30.  For the first time in history, the new District Governor is a female. Mallory Rinker won the position, making her only the second person ever to do so from Bridgeport High School, and, of course, the first female.

Eight students attended the Convention, along with advisors Charlene Keener and Kathy Cox.   The two advisors were awarded the Jeff C. Britton Advisor Award for being distinguished advisors and Sara McQueen was given The Sandy Nininger Award, the highest award a Key Clubber can receive.  The award was given for exemplifying outstanding community service and commitment.

The club overall received a Distinguished Club Award. Distinguished Secretary went to Eve Macfarland, Distinguished Vice President went to Sara MacFarland and Distinguished President went to Soofia Lateef.  The group spent the weekend attending sessions on leadership, communication, school improvement and community service.  The event was a perfect balance of networking, learning and teamwork.

Key Club is the world’s largest student led community service organization, made up of over 260,000 students nationwide.  Known for service projects with Unicef, March of Dimes and Children’s Miracle Network, the group also has a substantial impact on the local community.  BHS Key Clubbers spend each Wednesday evening volunteering with the residents of Meadowview Manor and are actively involved with the local Kiwanis Club.

A record of four different District offices was also achieved over the weekend, as Soofia Lateef won for President’s Liason, Eva MacFarland won Lieutenant Governor, Kali Pitsenberger on for District Secretary/Treasurer, and of course, Mallory Rinker as State Governor.  The group plans to travel to California this summer to attend the International Key Club Convention, where they will continue to develop resources needed to continue the successful efforts of this year.
