For nearly 30 years, the local American Legion has partnered with the Boy Scouts to demonstrate one of the most powerful Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies around.  On May 22, local scouts helped the American Legion representatives put flags on nearly 1300 graves at the Bridgeport Cemetery.  “It’s a huge job to put that many flags out and we really appreciate all the help the scouts provide,” said American Legion representative John Jones.

The American Legion is the nations largest wartime veterans’ organization, with 2.4 million members in 14,000 posts around the world.  They are dedicated to mentoring youth and promoting patriotism among the new generations through projects such as the flag event held this week.  They continue to advocate and honor fellow service members and veterans through various community service activities throughout the year and especially on holidays such as Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day.

“It’s a matter of veterans serving veterans,” said Jones.  “We have the opportunity to use our experiences to show the scouts how to honor the veterans and how to build character through service.  After all their help, we celebrate with a big pizza party to let them know how much we appreciate them.”
