Throughout the year, BHS DECA has been recognized for several community projects, including opening a store in Richwood, WV that benefits the flood victims and hosting local talent shows.  What many may not know, however, is the face behind many of the projects.
BHS Junior Jeffry Chalfant recently received state-wide recognition for his contributions in BHS DECA and was named West Virginia DECA Member of the Month.

“Only six students are recognized each year,” said WV State DECA Director Adam Feazell. “This pristine honor is given to students who go above and beyond what is expected as a DECA member.  With Jeffrey’s involvement and leadership initiatives in Bridgeport High School’s DECA program, the entire club was elevated to a new level.”

Always humble and usually behind the scenes, Jeffrey has excelled in using his organizational skills to make the BHS DECA projects a reality this year.  He served on the leadership team, was among those who were instrumental in launching the Richwood store, and volunteers tirelessly for fundraising, community service, speaking engagements and developing his business skills.

His leadership assisted with the seamless implementation of elementary art programs, t-shirt sales, raising awareness of SMA, the Simpson Elementary Talent Show, and the sponsorship of fundraising for local families in need.  He was among the students present during the DECA Day Proclamation at the Bridgeport City Council and has acted as a spokesperson for the club on the Mike Queen Show as well as presenting at local civic clubs.

Chalfant is passionate about raising awareness of drug abuse in Harrison County and recently served as the student representative of the BHS Drug Free Club as they were recognized at the FBI for their outstanding work.  He attends community programs regularly in order to find solutions to the local drug epidemic and has received both the FBI Community Leadership Award as well as the Outstanding Volunteer Award from Harrison County Schools.

In addition to his dedication to school and community, he also works part-time at Domino’s Pizza.  By juggling all of his responsibilities, he has demonstrated his time-management skills as well as his human relations skills and has proven to be invaluable as a student, an employee and as a DECA leader.

Chalfant will be recognized at the upcoming WV State DECA Career Development Conference in March and will be in the running for Student of the Year for WV State DECA.  He plans to pursue a career in accounting and participate in the Finance category at state competitions.
