Community Clean-Up Day Slated for April 22

By Julie Perine on April 16, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

You are invited to help launch Community Clean-Up Day.

Coinciding with Earth Day 2014, the event will take place Tues., April 22. The Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau and Connect-Bridgeport are partnering with Waste Management in a grassroots effort to green up the community.

By enlisting the help of interested civic clubs, other organizations and individuals, the intent is to clean up areas encompassing the banks of Hinkle and Deegan Lakes, walking trails and recreational facilities.

After being assigned designated areas, the army of participants will canvass the property, picking up trash that has been discarded. The need for the clean-up effort became especially necessary after the lakes opened for the spring fishing season, said Bridgeport CVB Executive Director Michelle Duez, who took the initiative to organize the event.

To give more groups and individuals opportunity to participate, Community Clean-Up Day will begin at 6 p.m. If enough people take part, the project shouldn’t take long.

Trash bags will be provided to all helpers and gardening gloves will be available to the first 50 in attendance.

RSVP to Michelle Duez, michelle@connect-bridgeport.com or 304-848-7200, extension 3. Already on board are Girl Scout Troop 5320 and GFWC Bridgeport Juniors.

Fishermen and other Hinkle and Deegan Lake visitors are urged to leave their areas the way they found them, not leaving behind any fast food containers, plastic bottles or other trash.
