Duez Being Locked Up for Muscular Dystrophy; Raising Bail of $2400

By Julie Perine on April 02, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

On a regular basis, Michelle Duez is seen out and about at various city functions. However, one place the face of the Greater Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director has never seen is behind bars.

That is about to change.

Duez is among volunteers to be incarcerated for a good cause on April 16. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., she will be participating in the Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up Event at Texas Roadhouse, New Pointe Plaza. Her bail has been set at $2400 and she is already at work raising those funds. All proceeds will be used to further research and treatment of the muscular disease.

It was Channing Moran, general manager of Microtel, who turned Duez in for having a compassionate heart and willingness to step up for a worthy cause. When she was contacted by MDA upon Moran’s recommendation, she decided to accept the challenge. Although she said she doesn’t personally know anyone who has been affected by MD, she knows firsthand what it is like to live with a life-changing disorder. Both of her late siblings were disabled.

“My sister had Rett Syndrome and my brother went undiagnosed, but probably had Rett Syndrome too,” she said. “At the time of his death, they didn’t recognize males with RS, but now they do.”

Duez hopes money raised will help those affected by the disease.

“Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world’s leading nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases,” she said.

A 20-year member of the GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club, Duez said she was raised to be civic minded. An opportunity such as this fits perfectly into her life’s purpose – to serve others.

“It’s a small piece in the big picture, but every bit helps,” she said.

To date, Duez has raised $300 toward her $2400 goal. Tax-deductible donations can be made at her personal fundraising page:
