180,000 pennies. Just picture it.  That’s how much the GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club raised in their Penny Auction earlier this month.  More than 80 local businesses donated items that were auctioned off at the event, which funds community projects throughout the year.

 

The club has been active in Bridgeport for over 50 years and is dedicated to meeting both local and national needs.  The 35 active members have been doing the Penny Auction for 10 years, along with other fundraisers including the Trick or Trot 5K, the Mother and Daughter Tea Party and the annual pepper sale.  Money raised goes toward a $500 scholarship for a Bridgeport High School senior this year, as well as sponsorship of students attending HOBY, Boys State and any other local needs that arise. 

 

The GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club also supports causes associated with their national sisters in the General Federation of Woman's Clubs.  The group focuses on issues pertaining to education, conservation, leadership, domestic violence, child advocacy, the arts and international outreach.  You can find more information at https://gfwcbjwc.shutterfly.com. 

 

Last week, 12 representatives traveled to The Greenbrier Resort for the annual GFWC WV Convention.  Bridgeport resident Shannon Gibson was named the GFWC WV Junior of the Year. The club meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Benedum Civic Center.  Meetings are held at 6:30pm and anyone is welcome to attend.
