GFWC Bridgeport Juniors' Annual Penny Auction Ushers In Some Change; Promises to be Bigger, Better this Year

Empty your pockets, look under the couch cushions and check your car floors!  Whatever it takes, start gathering up change for one of the most anticipated annual event in Bridgeport:  The GFWC Junior Woman’s Club Penny Auction.  This year, the event promises lots of changes, including a larger venue, bigger and better prizes and free concessions.

“The event is one of our largest fundraisers for the year,” said Junior’s Co-President Anna Matheny.  “Funds raised allow us to contribute to local families, programs, and students as well as the Mountaineer Food Bank.  We also give to state, national and international programs that benefit education, conservation, leadership, domestic violence, child advocacy, and the arts.”

This year’s penny auction will take place at the Bridgeport Conference Center instead of the traditional Benedum Civic Center, allowing for many more participants and providing free snacks donated by CEC. The event is scheduled for Sunday, February 26, beginning at 1:00p.m.  Doors will open at noon and members encourage participants to take advantage of the pre-sell which will include a free cup.

“Last year, the event sold out quickly, so the presale is a way to secure a spot,” Co-President Liz McDow. “We have made it convenient to pay by PayPal as well.”

This year will also have a $10 entry fee, with kids 12 and under receiving free admission.  Cups may be purchased for $3.00 each for a chance to win every prize, but there will be a 10 cup limit per person.  Additionally, there may be a few items that will welcome bids up to $1.00, as they are of higher value.

“The Juniorettes will hold a 50/50 drawing during the Penny Auction,” said Juniorettes Co-Chair Amy Romano.  “All money raised will go to the Bridgeport Challenger League.”
