Domestic Violence, the GFWCWV President’s Signature Project, was the chosen as the topic for the Spring Workshop held by the North Central District of the General Federation of Woman’s  Clubs. District President Cindy Jenkins presided. The workshop chairman was Anne Yost from the host club, GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport. The event was held April 18 at Best Western in Bridgeport.

One of the morning speakers was Bridgeport Prevention Resource Officer Jamie Hamrick. Her topic was Anti-Bullying.  She reported that there are many successful projects and sessions held for the children in Bridgeport and that those programs will continue.

AmeriCorps Volunteers, Rebecca Nelson and Jennifer Shingleton presented “Change the Future WV,” an educational program based on statistics provided by members and resulting in information that can be used to improve their health.

A representative from Hope Inc. spoke on domestic violence in this area with comments on the new larger shelter being constructed in Fairmont.  It will be more secure and house more victims which is greatly needed.

The afternoon service project was combining clothing items to make kits for victims of sexual assault. The clothing, totaling more than $1019, was donated by members of district clubs.  Fourteen kits and leftover clothing were delivered to Hope, Inc.

A leadership workshop was led by Cindy Jenkins and Donna Mick, titled “My Name is …” It was very informative and enjoyed by those present.

Linda Lemasters reported on “Pennies for Arts,” a special state art project. The contest entries were judged this past March at the GFWC State Convention at The Greenbrier.  The winning art entry was produced by art students and sponsored by the Shinnston Club.  Another contest will be held during 2015 and judged next spring.

Natalie Hinkle presented a Powerpoint presentation on “Arts in the Community” project  “Inspirational Quilt Trail,” a very interesting program where quilt replicas are placed on fences, barns and other buildings. Seven counties in West Virginia have participated in this project and have maps to follow to see quilts.  It is hoped that this project will inspire some quilt replicas in this area.

The awards for the club with largest attendance and the greatest percentage of their membership in attendance were won by GFWC North Central Junior Alumnae club.
