By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on April 20, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Following the GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport held its annual Young Writers Contest, winners were invited to attend the organization's April meeting and accept their certificates and awards. Awards were presented in different grade categories. The contest is promoted annually through local schools. Entries are judged by club members with the works of first place winners sent to the state for further judging. From there, entries are sent to the General Federation of Women National Convention held in June. Arts Chairman Karen Lang is hoping we have a national winner this year. Short story entries are Autum Honce and Geri Signorelli. Poetry entries are Cody Ballard and Minahal Naveed. Second place finishers were Lilah Kimble, Madison Seti, Arryn Tennant and Zack Hinerman. Those receiving third place were Erica Cottrill, Alden Smith, Alexis Sczerba and Claire Casto. All winners are pictured above.

Also at the April meeting, Diane Wickland was welcomed as a new member and received a club pin. A candlelight induction ceremony was conducted by President Ruth Allen and Membership Chairman Shirley Hadorn.

Guest speaker for the evening was Karen Morgan, who delivered a very interesting and informative presentation about Pearl S. Buck. Peal S. Buck was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia and was an famous author and Pulitzer Prize winner.

As they do during each meeting, members recited the GFWC Pledge.
