GFWC Woman's Club of Bridgeport Observes International Night; Program Features Travels of Maggie Lohmann

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 19, 2020 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

International Night was observed by the GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at The Benedum Civic Center.

As an International Dinner could not be held this year, the hostess committee presented each member attending a Halloween Gift bag containing cookies originating from different countries.

Members were delighted with a power point presentation prepared by 2016 Bridgeport High School graduate/2020 West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate Maggie Lohmann. During the summer of 2019, she participated in a six-week study program at Kohn Kaen University in Thailand, studying Thai language and history, as well as global health issues.

It was noted that some of the small towns and landscaping reminded her of West Virginia.  It was interesting to find out foods and customs of this country. (Read more about Lohmann's travels HERE.)

The presentation was presented by her mother, Amy Lohmann.

Tying in with the program and theme of the meeting, members brought items they had collected from countries abroad and international recipes which will be compiled, printed and distributed to members.

During the business portion of the meeting final arrangements were made for the Drive-thru Food Drive, which will be held October 24 to benefit Shepherds Corner.  Those wishing to donate can drop items off at Oliverio's Ristorante parking lot or Lions' Circle (Philadelphia and Johnson Ave.) between 9 a.m. and noon. Items can be also dropped off anytime during the week of Oct. 19-23, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bridgeport Fire Department or Bridgeport Municipal Building.

It was voted on and passed that the club make monetary donations to Shepherd's Corner, Anna Jarvis Birthplace, Bed for Kids, Clarksburg Mission, Mountaineer Food Bank, Hope Inc., Shot at Life and Boxing it Up to Give Thanks.

Members will bring toys for Salvation Army and WVU Children’s Medicine at the November meeting.

Anyone interested in joining GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport can contact Karen Leon, membership chairman at  304 -842-5585 or any club member.
