Hundreds of Gift Bags Packed and Loaded for Local Families

From the time we are little, we are told it is better to give than to receive. Volunteers for H.I.S. BridgeBuilders can attest that that saying is very true as they collected, sorted and packed nearly 400 bags filled with Christmas gifts and necessities for local families.

This marked the 9th year of the Annual Christmas Celebration sponsored by H.I.S. BridgeBuilders. The organization is run by Bridgeport residents Gwen Cornman and Ray and Tressa Shaw and is dedicated to serving those in need in Harrison County.

“All denominations came together to witness the blessing of giving,” said Cornman, who helped coordinate the efforts of preparing the bags for delivery. The bags will be given to families in the Monticello Avenue and Laurel Lanes communities, where residents will also be treated to special celebrations this month. “Next week, we will be inviting families from both communities to events filled with good food and entertainment as we celebrate Christmas.”

The local mission outreach aims to bring education, health, economic development and spiritual growth to those in need. The Clarksburg branch started in 2006 and has numerous volunteers who make it possible to serve those in need. The organization has build community centers in both locations and offers tutoring, life skills classes, addiction recovery groups and Bible studies to residents in the area.

Local businesses and churches contributed items for the gift bags, which included hygiene and cleaning supplies as well as age-appropriate gifts for the whole family.  “We are always so amazed at the generosity from the community and so grateful that God provides in order for us to be able to continue the program,” said Cornman. Several students from BHS clubs and organizations helped stuff the bags and organize them for delivery. H.I.S. BridgeBuilders also provides over 300 backpacks filled with supplies to local students and free health checks for residents.
