For the past four years, the GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club has partnered with Kroger's Mid-Atlantic Division through their Zero Hunger Zero Waste initiative to help fight food insecurity through an exciting community event. The annual “Grocery Grab” fundraiser has benefitted various Harrison County backpack programs since 2016.

This year has brought a variety of unique challenges to the community; the Grocery Grab event has not been immune to the effects of COVID-19 restrictions. As such, the fundraiser previously planned for November of 2020 will take place on Feb. 18 in the brand new Kroger location on Emily Drive.

“It’s truly shocking to know the number of families and children that go hungry or risk going hungry,” said Latricia Wolfe, club president. “The GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club is honored to have the support of our community and Kroger to help fight hunger in Harrison County.”

“The Grocery Grab event is something we look forward to being a part of year after year,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. “We are committed to ending hunger throughout West Virginia and the support of partners like the Bridgeport Junior Woman's Club helps us to make that goal a reality.”

Harrison County Schools has been able to provide food packages to students throughout this unprecedented school year, which has reduced the immediate need from the populations who normally receive services from backpack programs. This means that funds raised from the Grocery Grab event this year may be directed to other similar local needs.

Five semifinalists will be drawn from all tickets sold and notified on or about Feb. 10. The grand prize winner will be drawn at the event on Feb. 18 and will be awarded a two-minute grocery shopping spree (some exclusions apply). The four remaining semifinalists will receive alternate prizes. In past years, grand prize winners have often managed to gather over $1,000 worth of groceries during their shopping sprees.

Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20, and are available for purchase online HERE or via any member of the GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club. Complete program rules can be viewed HERE
