To earn the Bronze Award in Girl Scouting, Bridgeport Troop 51424’s Delta Abbott, Kamille Washington and Alaina Thomas had to complete a journey and a take-action sustainability project, committing at least 20 hours toward their end goal.

Being fond of animals and the beauty of Bridgeport, the girls partnered with Ducks Unlimited to build wood duck boxes, providing shelters for area ducks.

“The girls were responsible to come up with their design plan, the build, scouting out appropriate locations to place the boxes and installing them,” said Troop Leader Aimee Abbott. “They also had to do research to make sure their design was appropriate. They had to understand the terrain where the boxes were going to be installed, and they had to go through some safety training to use hand and power tools for building the boxes.”

The project officially started at the beginning of July and the girls worked weekly and spent approximately 25 hours on the project.

The boxes were installed mid-September within Bridgeport city limits. One box was installed at Hinkle and Deegan Lake and two boxes were installed at City Park near Simpson Creek.

The Bronze Award in scouting is earned as a Junior Scout, 4th and 5th graders. Assisting with the project were Abbott, Assistant Troop Leader Amy Sigley, Jeremy Abbott and Luke Sigley. All are pictured above.
