NHS Holds Annual Induction and Honors Senior Members

By Trina Runner on May 04, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport High School inducted 30 juniors into the National Honor Society on April 27.  The ceremony was two-fold, with the senior members receiving their honor stoles and tassels.  In keeping with the traditions, candles were lit to represent the core values of NHS, which include scholarship, character, service and leadership.

In order to be a member of National Honor Society, students are held to the highest of standards. They must have a 3.7 GPA, take part in a minimum of five service projects and complete a candidate form to be reviewed by the Faculty Council.  This year, members participated in several service projects. They raised money for Colorado flood victims, helped with Johnson Elementary Trunk or Treat event, prepared Thanksgiving baskets for needy families, made stockings for Salvation Army families, donated food for the BHS Weekend Backpack Food Program, prepared and served food at the Clarksburg Mission and sponsored a school-wide blood drive.

NHS is a student-run organization and students do all of the planning and implementing of service projects throughout the year.  In addition to their commitment to service, they also focus on maintaining high academic standards, demonstrating good character and becoming strong leaders.  Faculty Council members are Anita Byrd, John Cole, Charlene Keener, Dave Marshall and Jennifer Sprouse.  Advisor Roberta Sinsel is ex-officio member.  All memberships are reviewed by BHS Principal Mark DeFazio.

The NHS Induction ceremony included presentations by the officers, President Tre Trecost, Vice President Tristan Quinones; Recording Secretary Alaina Shreves; Corresponding Secretary Laura Baumann and Treasurer Matthew Lowther.  Music was performed by Tristan Quinones and light and sound was done by Jonathan Griffith.  Ceremony and reception coordinators included Zachary Boles, Nicole Doukas, Miguel Henriquez, Robert Sinsel, Victoria Stingo and Danielle Walden.
