Pool Mural Contest Held for Local Teens

For anyone who has ever walked the halls at Bridgeport High School, the artistic talent of the students is obvious.  Room after room, hall after hall is covered in murals, each created by the students of Amber Davis.  Her student’s work is also displayed in cases throughout the school and currently in an exhibit near the auditorium.  So, when it came time for the GFWC Bridgeport Junior Women’s Club to start searching for high school artists for a local contest, Davis and her students were an obvious choice.

The GFWC Bridgeport Junior Women’s Club is a huge supporter of programs throughout the community and the world.  This month is National Youth Art Month and one of the programs they support is the American Mural Project.

“Though we are proud to give money to this national project, we also wanted to determine ways to encourage art in our community.  That is how we came up with the idea for this contest, “ said club member Shannon Gibson.

The contest to which she is referring is to challenge a high school artist to design a mural for the bottom of the kid’s pool.  Currently, it is decorated with simple black fish shapes and the club, along with the city, wanted to give students the opportunity to put a creative “splash” into the theme.  The contest is open to any high school student, not just art students, and the deadline for design submissions is April 1.  The winning artist will paint the mural on the bottom of the pool in late April or early May, weather permitting.

“Participants can design full color designs to be painted on the bottom of the small square pool at the Bridgeport City Pool Complex,” said Gibson.  “All submissions should be child-friendly and aquatic in nature.”  The winning design will be chosen by the Arts Committee of the Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club and the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department.

Anyone interested in entering the contest should submit their design to Amber Davis or Trina Runner at Bridgeport High School by April 1.
