The 20th annual Harrison County Relay for Life muscled major awareness and thousands of dollars in fundraising efforts.

Held at Wayne Jamison Field Friday evening through Saturday morning, the event reflected a superhero theme, which was carried out through decorations, costumes, activities and some special invited guests. On hand for photos and meet and greet opportunities were characters from Heroes 4 Higher.

“I think the theme worked out well this year,” Barcus said. “Heroes 4 Higher were a big hit with both kids and adults. They were part of the opening ceremony teaching kids not to bully, to always tell the truth and to never give up.”

A goal had been set at $125,000, of which $81,200 has been raised, said Courtney Barcus, committee member. Of that amount, $6,400 was raised during the relay event; some of it through fundraisers held at the Relay event.

“Every year, teams hold raffles and bake sales to raise money,” Barcus said. “This year, Team TransAmerica also organized a scavenger hunt for both kids and adults along with a Big Purse Contest. There was also a rock climbing wall, along with a bouncy house for kids.”

The event is much more than a fundraiser. It’s an annual celebration, attended by cancer survivors, caretakers and loved ones of those who have lost their battle with the disease. They come to walk together and to share stories, experiences and remembrances. Several organizations, families and businesses formed walking teams and secured financial sponsors for their efforts.

This year’s Relay for Life attendance was bigger than last, Barcus said.
