Saturday is Kiwanis Club Buckwheat Breakfast Day

By Julie Perine on March 14, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Last month, city residents were lured to the Benedum Civic Center to enjoy homemade chili; this time, the draw is made-from-scratch Preston County-style buckwheat cakes.

The Bridgeport Kiwanis Club will hold its Annual Spring Buckwheat and Sausage Breakfast 8 a.m. to noon Sat., March 15.

The all-you-care-to-eat price is $7 for eat-in or carry-out.

Proceeds will benefit the many community projects of the Bridgeport Kiwanis, which include the Benedum Festival Youth Fishing Derby, Adopt-A-Highway Program, support of the BHS Quiz Bowl tournaments, scholarships to local high school students and leadership training, conferences and projects of the BHS Key Club, a spin-off of Kiwanis.

The BHS Key Club works closely with Bridgeport Kiwanis and will be assisting with Saturday’s fundraiser, which according to the club’s Richard Bailey has been a community tradition since the early 1970s. As always, the original recipe, handed down from the late Joe Nicewarner, will be used, he said.

There will be ample, free parking and handicap accessibility. The breakfast has proven to be a community event.
