Third Annual Walk for Autism is Saturday at Clarksburg City Park

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 07, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The third annual Walk for Autism will take place 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Clarksburg City Park in Nutter Fort. There is no entry fee to walk. Nutter Fort Mayor Nathan Rohrbough will be on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony, proclamation and balloon release.

Children on the autism spectrum will be performing in a talent show and a DJ will be on hand to spin tunes throughout the event. After the actual walk and talent show, the Clarksburg City Fire Department will give tours of their fire engine truck and smoke house.  Representatives from local libraries will be reading stories and therapy dogs will be present. Many sensory, therapy, and service booths will provide information and fun crafts and games for the kids. Those organizations include Milestones/Achievements, Parent Resource Center, Project Lifesaver, Autism Training Center, Best Life Therapy, Cornerstone Pediatrics, to name a few.  Autism items such as t-shirts, pins, magnets, and lanyards will be available for purchase (cash only) with all proceeds going to the event.

The Walk for Autism Committee became the Corridor Chapter of the Autism Society of West Virginia on January 30, 2013.  A Kick-Off Picnic was held June 20, 2013 with great attendance and lots of fun for the families. A four-session swimming challenge was held at the Harrison County YMCA for children with autism and siblings  in September of 2013 and April of 2014.  The chapter also supports Project Lifesaver.

In March, the chapter took a 50-passenger bus trip to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.  In June, two buses were taken to the Pittsburgh Zoo and Incline.  In July, a pool party was held at Bridgeport City Pool.  Future endeavors include a roller skating/blading party, sensory friendly film, ice skating party, bowling outing, train ride, and another fitness program with the YMCA.

Artwork for the event was designed by Bridgeport's Conner Ford. Read about Conner HERE
