Twelve to Represent BHS at 75th Girls State in June

Celebrating 75 years of service and education, the Rhododendron Girls State will include twelve Bridgeport High School students who are in the process of finishing their junior year.  Around 400 girls from around the state are expected to attend the week-long event, making them part of the nearly 30,000 who have been part of the tradition since it began.  Wheeling Jesuit University will host the young ladies June 11-17 as they immerse themselves in all things government.

Rhododendron Girls State is a non-partisan program that instills a love of God and country in young ladies around the Mountain State.  Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary National Convention coordinates a wide variety of notable speakers to encourage and educate the girls on the roles of government.

Attendees have the opportunity to participate in art contests, a talent show, a fitness challenge, and several classes.  They are also encouraged to run for various government and civilian positions in a mock society, learning the impact of advocating for one’s beliefs.  The specific speakers for this year are still being confirmed, but traditionally, the speakers include delegates, senators and the Secretary of State.

In 2015, Bridgeport’s Katie Mossburg served as Governor of Girls State, representing our area for the first time in over 30 years.  This year, 12 girls will follow in her footsteps, taking the opportunity to learn about leadership, parliamentary procedure, and community participation.

Those attending the 2017 Girls State include Maggie Lane, Lauren Winkie, Catie Wilson, Jenna Love, Lacy Bryant, Sarah Palmer, Jenna Soltez, Katelyn Pinti, Victoria McDaniels, Kaitlin Smith, Avery Tommes and Christina Guirguis.  Each girl is sponsored by a local civic organization and was selected based on her interest in government, her character, and her commitment to community service.
