Young Life Hosting Sporting Clays Fundraiser

Young Life has had a bang-up year in Bridgeport, averaging 40 teens for weekly meetings featuring music, games and the building of spiritual foundation.

“Generally, we create an environment that allows kids to be kids and allows them to just have fun and it gives them a place they can be themselves,” said Nathaniel “Looch” Lutyens, Harrison County area director. “So we’re breaking down walls and sharing the gospel a little bit each week.”

In gearing up for the 2014-2015 school year, the Young Life organization is hosting a July 12 fundraiser – complete with barbeque lunch – at A Mountain Clays.

The sporting clays fundraiser is a first-time event for Young Life; one meant to combine outdoor adventure and a little friendly competition with an opportunity to raise money for its operating budget.

“We did golf tournaments for a couple years and I just really wanted to do something fun and different – something not too many people around here have done yet,” Lutyens said. “The area is pretty saturated with golf tournaments so I felt we were pretty much fighting against the current to get that one off the ground. We decided to make a switch and landed on this idea.”

A Young Life group in Pennsylvania has hosted a sporting clay fundraiser for several years and seen much success, Lutyens said. Since Bridgeport now has a sporting clay facility, it seemed ideal. The Saturday, July 12 event can accommodate 30 total people. As of today, about a dozen spots remain.

Registration is $100, which includes 25 clays, an on-site pulled pork barbeque lunch and an event T-shirt. Shooters can participate in individual and/or team competition, with three member-teams.

“We have some pretty unique prizes to give away, including some carved wooden plaques made here in West Virginia,” Lutyens said. “Whoever does well will have some mementos to take away.”

Participants may bring their own shotguns or rent one through A Mountain Clays. Minimum age for participation is 18. Registration can be made via email at nlutyens@wv26.younglife.org.

A Mountain Clays is located off Meadowbrook Road, just past and on the opposite side of the road as the entrance to Pete Dye Golf Club.
