BHS Alumni & Friends Foundation Accepting Strawberry Orders throughout April; Delivery Slated for May 10

After taking a year off from their annual strawberry sale, members of Bridgeport High School Alumni & Friends Foundation said this year, it’s back on. Orders will be accepted throughout the month of April with delivery scheduled for May 10.

Residents of Bridgeport and surrounding communities think that’s pretty sweet.

“A lot of people have been asking about it,” said Cookie Compton of the foundation’s board of directors.

Once again, berries will be ordered through Goots Produce and come from strawberry patches in the Carolinas. Customers can choose from a whole flat or half flat, 12 and six pints, respectively. Many look forward to eating the freshly-picked berries and some plan to freeze them or use in their jam, jelly and dessert recipes.

A half flat will sell for $15 and a whole flat for $24. Those who pre-order berries can pick them up May 10 at the concession stand at Wayne Jamison Field. Additional berries will be available for purchase on a first-come basis.

The sale has traditionally been the foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year, starting as a way to support the foundation’s scholarships, awarded annually to high school seniors. It was BHS journalism teacher Alice Rowe who suggested the sale several years ago and it has been embraced by the community since.

The foundation provides more than $60,000 in college scholarships annually. Winners of scholarships are named annually at the BHS Senior Assembly.

BHS Alumni & Friends Foundation is pleased to bring back the strawberry sale which was not held last year due to construction projects, Compton said.

Berries can be ordered by calling Compton at 304-677-2005. Order forms will be distributed to area businesses on April 4, she said.
