When Corynn Hawkins won the Bridgeport High School Talent Show in 2010, she had no way of knowing that seven years later, she would be auditioning for The Voice, the award-winning series featuring the best vocalists in the nation.  She did, however, have a passion for her craft, immense talent and a strong network of supporters encouraging her throughout the process.

After creating an artist account and registering for The Voice’s open casting call in Baltimore, Hawkins learned that patience and talent would become the focus of her life in early 2017.  Tens of thousands of hopeful people auditioned, but the process involved a lot of waiting, anticipating what would come next.

“Nearly two months passed between the time that I set up my artist account and the time I actually auditioned,” said Hawkins.  “Each of us was given an artist pass to get into the audition, but we still had to wait in lines, go through security, and then check in prior to being grouped together with other singers.”

Ten at a time were called into the room.  Each singer was asked to sing a verse and a chorus from a song.  After all of the singers in the group were finished, they were told who would stay and would go.

“I sang eighth in my group and chose “Oh Darlin” by the Beatles as my song,” said Hawkins.  “Ironically, I wasn’t nervous at all.  I sang with passion and heart and was excited to see what the producer had to say.  She looked at her computer and said, ‘Corynn and Jamie, you can stay.  The rest can go.  Thank you.’  I instantly started smiling.”

For the next step, Hawkins was asked to sing for another producer.  Again, she made it through!  After uploading another video, more waiting followed as she checked her email daily to find out if she would be selected to go to the next audition in Los Angelos.

“After two weeks, I received an email letting me know that the season was full, but that they thought I was very talented and invited me to come back next season.  I was disappointed, but I am not giving up,” she said.

Hawkins, who was in the BHS Show Choir, Concert Choir and Theatre Class, was featured on stage throughout her high school career.  She is determined to continue her efforts to showcase her talent and plans to start a YouTube channel and Facebook Live videos in order to gain a bigger following.

“ I just want to put my voice out there and let them hear how much love I have for music and hopefully, those will be the people voting for me when I get on The Voice,” she said.
