BHS Announces Students of the Month for January, Michael Gray and Kayla Haywood

Bridgeport High School’s Students of the Month for January are Michael Gray and Kayla Haywood.
 
Michael is the son of Mark & Lesa Gray of Bridgeport. A scholar-athlete, he has been most active on the football field in addition to the class room.
 
He has been a member of the Bridgeport High School Football Team for four years. He has place the past two years in the Top Ten most conditioned athletes on the team.
 
During his freshmen, sophomore and junior years he played running back and linebacker. His ability to lead is evident through his decision to volunteer a position change to defensive lineman his senior year to add strength to the 2014 team.
 
Gray has become a standout on the defensive unit. Becoming one of the top leaders in the county for tackles for loss. He was awarded the 2014 Talon Steadman Memorial Award for heart, selflessness and being the ultimate team player.
 
He also received honors of being selected First Team All Harrison County, First Team WV Big 10 Defensive End and First Team WV Class AA All State Defensive Linemen.
 
Gray has been honored to be part of school history as a team member of the 2013 & 2014 WV Class "AA" Football State Champions.
 
A leader through the school and community, Gray has been a two year volunteer coach for Powder Puff Football to benefit the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center in Morgantown. He has also volunteered at the Children's Charity Golf Classic for Med- Brook Children's Charity held at the Pete Dye Golf Course. He also, participated in the Shop for Tots Program.
 
Gray is certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard and was employed the last two summers at the Bridgeport City Pool. He enjoys working with the youth and teaching swim lessons. He has also worked at Chick- fil-A, and is currently employed with Buckle at the Meadowbrook Mall.
 
Gray has been an honor student. His junior year he also took advance placement college Trigonometry and Algebra classes through a school partnership with West Virginia University that were taught at the school. His senior year he is currently taking Advance College courses at Pierpont Community & Technical College in preparation of his dream of becoming a US Marshall.
 
He will attend college, although his destination is still undecided. He plans to study Criminal Justice.
 
Kayla  Haywood  is  the  daughter  of  Keith  and  Marsha  Haywood  of Bridgeport. Kayla has been ·a member of Student Councilor three years where she served as Secretary in her junior year and has participated in several service projects.  She has also been a member of Young Life, where she has had the opportunity to attend Young Life Summer camp in Rock Bridge, Va.  Kayla  was  selected to  attend  Rhododendron  Girls State  this   past  summer   in  Wheeling, WV,  where  she  was  chosen outstanding citizen.  Kayla has been a four year member of the BHS
 
Varsity Track and Field, where she holds state titles in the Long Jump, 100 and 200 meter dashes and the 4 x 200 relay. This past year she was also named 2014 BB&T Female Track Athlete of the Year. She has also been a · four year member of the BHS Varsity Cheer Team where she serves as Co-Captain. She is currently taking college courses towards her college degree.  Upon graduating from BHS, Kayla plans to attend college and pursue a career as a Neonatal Nurse.
