BHS Humane Society Club Sponsoring Dog Wash, Costume Contest and More

By Trina Runner on October 22, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Next Saturday is going to the dogs!  The Bridgeport High School Humane Society Club will be catering to the four-legged friends from noon until 4:00p.m. in front of BHS.  Club President, Imoni Saab, started the organization last year in an effort to raise funds and resources that would benefit the Harrison County Humane Society and offset the costs of some of the procedures needed by animals.

The BHS Humane Society Club has already promoted pet adoption, provided holiday-themed treats for the animals, collected food and supplies for the Humane Society and regularly volunteered with the dogs and cats.  Now, they are dedicating an afternoon to pampering pooches.

Students involved with the club will be sponsoring a Dog Wash on Saturday,October 29, beginning at noon at BHS.  Following their bath, pets can enjoy additional grooming, including nail clippings, with the Heart-to-Heart Pet Grooming Van, which will be on site until 4:00p.m. Their staff will be donating their time and resources for the cause.

At 1:30 p.m., there will be a costume competition for dogs of all ages with prizes going to the top three costumes.  There will also be homemade dog treats for sale all day.

Saab started the BHS Humane Society Club last fall, meeting weekly with members to determine how they can help homeless pets.  About 50 students are involved in the efforts, which has included participating in the Paws and Claws Holiday Pet Bazaar last year, walking in the Bridgeport City Christmas Parade, and showcasing the animals at last year’s Light Up Night.  The club also sold homemade dog treats last summer to aid in flood relief.

Additionally, the students have collected food, blanket, and monetary donations throughout the year to support the pets.  Saab and classmate Brook Russell attended the West Virginia Legislative Session’s Humane Lobby Day in February and were instrumental in the passing of House Bill 4201 and Senate Bill 436, which require adequate conditions and treatment of animals.

Tickets for the Dog Wash are $10 and can be bought by contacting Saab at 304-695-6438.  Nail trims will be $5 and additional grooming will be priced by Heart-to-Heart Pet Grooming.  Entry into the Costume Competition for the dogs will be $3.   Walk ups are also encouraged. Visit the Harrison County Humane Society Facebook page for updates on the rescheduling of their 5K and for donation opportunities.
