BHS's Titus Smith Honored for Dedication, Service as One of Two Benedum Youth Service Award Winners

From the time Titus Smith was little, he put others before himself.  As an active Boy Scout, he has put their motto to use more times than he can count, making sure he is “prepared” to help others.  It was that attitude, and the work behind it, that earned him the Benedum Festival Youth Leadership Award.

Through Boy Scouts, he has been the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, served on the Junior Staff at Stonewall Jackson District Day Camp for five years, and has assisted on several Eagle Scout projects that benefitted the community.  He has honored the veterans by placing flags on the their graves for five years and has participated in the Veteran’s Day Parade, Bridgeport’s Light Up Night and installing a flag pole at the Bridgeport Police Firing Range.

As a volunteer, Smith has beautified the area around Hinkle and Deegan Lakes and the Bridgeport City Park as an active member of Key Club and as part of Boy Scouts.  This year, he was honored to be a part of Boys State, where he was nominated for the Kerchief Award.

Throughout school, he has participated in Youth and Government activities, Key Club, Bridgeport High School swim team, track, National French Honorary Society, National Honor Society, Chess Club, T.E.A.M.S. Competition and French Club.  He has also been on honor roll every semester of school.

“Smith has proven to be dedicated to his community, school, church, and government and is an outstanding representative of what young people strive to be,” said BHS teacher Letitia Yeater.  “He is a born leader with so much potential and I have no doubt he will make quite an impression on the world.”

Smith will be honored, along with Maggie Lohmann, during the evening events on July 2 at Bridgeport’s Picnic in the Park.  Both winners will receive plaques recognizing their contributions to the community.
