Bridgeport Boy Scouts Troop 40 Continues Mission of Good Deeds with Gifts to Veterans during Holidays

Despite dealing with COVID-19, Bridgeport Boy Scouts Troop 40 has remained active during 2020 and plans on doing the same into 2021, according to Scoutmaster Jason Hosaflook.

As is often the case, many of the project will be geared toward assisting veterans. Before learning about the most recent project there were multiple projects that kept the youngsters busy this past year.

The group assisted with presenting the colors and leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the city’s virtual Light Up Night, assisted with placing wreaths at the Wreaths Across America event, worked during the Bridgeport Police and Fire Department Food Drive with Santa, provided moral support for Jingle Bell Jog participants, worked with Simpson Creek Baptist Church on Operation Christmas Child and Hands of Hope Ministry, worked with the Box it up Program at Thanksgiving to provide meals for the needy, among others.

“This year with COVID, it has been tough on us as it has on everything,” said Hosaflook. “Our troop is blessed with great scouts, leaders, and parents and enormous community support.”

The pandemic provided one final curve in 2020. Plans were made to deliver their latest project to the Louis A. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital Nursing Home, sing carols and visit the veterans. Due to COVID restrictions, that was not possible.

The scouts did complete their project, which did go to the veterans. The group made no-tie fleece blankets.

“We still were able to make nine blankets, one for each of the veteran residents.  The blankets were delivered by Brian Besten, a Troop 40 Leader and a VA Hospital employee,” said Hosaflook. “This service project was planned by the troops youth leadership lead by Senior Patrol Leader Brady Hosaflook.”

The Scouts made the blankets at home and dropped them off. Each blanket had a card attached to it.
