Bridgeport High School won big at WVU Reed College of Media’s High School Journalism Competition!. After receiving nine awards in the 2015 competition and the same amount the following year, Bridgeport took home eleven shining trophies on April 7 this year.  Six of those eleven trophies were labeled “1st Place”.

The winners are as follows:

Allie Cava- 3rd in Photojournalism Division 2

Katie Coburn- 1st in Public Relations Division 1 and 2

Lilah Kimble- 1st in Critical Review Writing Division 2

Kenzie Kress- 1st in Advertising Divisions 1 and 2

Marinda Griffith- 1st in Feature Layout and Design Division 2

Mackenzie McCullough- 2nd in Photojournalism Division 2

Vincent Pinti- 2nd in Feature Writing Division 2

Douglas Soule-1st in Broadcast News Division 2, 1st in Feature Writing Division 2, 2nd in Editorial Writing Division 2, and 2nd in Public Relations 1 and 2

Mrs. Alice Rowe, the journalism and photography teacher at Bridgeport High School, has taken students to the High School Journalism Competition for more than three decades.

“Seeing the expression and pleasure and the confirmation that they did a good job is just worth the world to me,” Mrs. Rowe said. “It’s part of why I do what I do. To see them all gain confidence in themselves and to know that they can do a good job, one that is recognized by other people, is an award to me.”

Lilah Kimble, a sophomore and a 1st place winner with her movie review of La La Land, was unable to attend the award ceremony and luncheon. She received the update of her victory while across the ocean in England and was thrilled to find out about her win.

“After being told that I received first place, I was ecstatic! Winning for my category gives me a sense of recognition for my hard work and makes me feel that the long hours editing drafts were worth it," she said.

Also a sophomore at Bridgeport High, Vincent Pinti placed 2nd with his feature story about attending the presidential inauguration this past January. For him, writing the story itself was better than any award.

“It was really a gratifying experience and it was really the ‘candle on the cake’ in the way that writing the story was an eye-opener to me. It allowed for me to experience what a journalist does and the lessons we can learn by listening to the thoughts and views of others," Pinti said.
