Continuing Their Commitment to Academic Excellence, BHS Welcomes Several New Faculty Members

The hallways of Bridgeport High School are full of new students, homecoming preparations, and quite a few new faces among the faculty.  Although new to BHS, not all of the teachers are new to educations, bringing with them a fresh perspective, creative teaching techniques and a commitment to challenging students across the curriculum.  The six positions feature educators from all across West Virginia who are more than ready to embrace the BHS pride.

While finishing his last semester at WVU, Science Teacher John Bard will graduated in December in Biochemistry with a certification in secondary education in chemistry and general science.  He currently teaches Earth Science and Physical Science at BHS. As a first year teacher, he acknowledges the first few weeks were an adjustment but commended the faculty and administrators for making him feel welcome and helping him with the transition.  Bard, originally from Richwood, WV, is married to BHS alumnus Taylor (Bailey) Bard.

“I am looking forward to growing as a teacher and as a person during this year,” said Bard.  “I hope to instill the love of science in my students and encourage them to become intellectually curious about the subject.”

As a long-term substitute in the Vocational Agriculture program at BHS, Zachary Zwiebel has committed his time to preparing for classes to ensure students who began the program last year do not fall behind.  With the new greenhouse in order and the garden in the courtyard, his students will have a living classroom where they can apply the concepts learned by Zwiebel.

“I have subbed in various parts of the county for the last two years,” said Zwiebel.  “This experience is helping me to become a better teacher and learn about the additional opportunities around the school in which I can become involved.”

Joining her husband, Brad Bonenberger, at BHS is Margaret Bonenberger.  Originally from Hinton, WV, she has been teaching for 13 years and is excited to join the staff at BHS.  Bonenberger is teaching English 9 and English 11 and is very grateful for kindness shown to her by both students and staff.

Bridgeport High School’s new Aerospace Engineering program has Rafe Snell at the helm.  Using a simulated workplace, he immerses students in what it would be like to work in the field and covers all subjects regarding aviation.  Snell taught in the Options Pathway for the last five years after serving as a long-term substitute for the county.

“This program gives students a new career option and I am truly honored to be a part of such a strong faculty who is dedicated to continually challenging students academically,” said Snell.

For the past four years, Chris Broadwater has taught music, band, strings and choir at Simpson Elementary. Now teaching concert choir, music appreciation and piano at BHS, Broadwater also serves as the assistant band director.

“I have been working with the BHS band for about six years now and I wanted to come to BHS because I enjoy working with Mr. Hayslette and the students here,” Broadwater said.  “I am hoping to grow the band and choir programs and provide more diverse ensemble opportunities for the students.”

Rounding out the new faces at BHS is Renee Warner, who has 17 years of teaching experience and 13 years in administration under her belt.  Joining her sister, Charlea Ramsey, in the math department, Warner is currently teaching Algebra Support, Algebra I, and will begin teaching Teacher Cadet in the Spring.  Warner was recognized as NAESP WV National Distinguished Principal last year and has also earned the title of Upshur County Teacher of the Year in 2006.

“After serving as an administrator for many years, my passion for teaching was reignited when I started teaching at Alderson Broadus this summer,” Warner says.  “I believe God arranged that so I could return to the classroom when this position was posted.  I am thrilled to be able to support students and nurture them through their high school career and I am looking forward to a long connection with this wonderful school.”

“We are very fortunate to have these additions to our faculty, bringing with them diverse personal and professional backgrounds and experience that will be an asset to our students,” said BHS Principal Matt Demotto.
