Council Goals, Action Items for 2021 Approved; Library, Return of Proclamations Discussed

City Council quickly took care of official business during Monday’s regular meeting, while two other items were discussed that are encouraging signs of a return to normalcy.

The agenda featured just one item, the consideration and acting on an approval of the 2021 Council goals and action items, and it was approved with no issue.

The list consists of four broad goals with each having 3-5 action items to help reach the goals.
The four broad goals are:
  1. Maintain and develop the infrastructure of Bridgeport.
  2. Make informed decisions on people, places and resources.
  3. Support actions that will strengthen the local economy.
  4. Research policies and actions that can contribute to improving the quality of life in Bridgeport.
As part of the City Manager’s report, Wetmore announced that the City Library is scheduled to re-open on Thursday to in-person visitation for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hours will be the same as they currently are which are noon to 8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday as well as noon until 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

Contactless pickup will continue to be used and patrons must wear a mask. One of the social distancing guidelines will be a limit on the number of computers to five.

More details on the re-opening and guidelines that will be in place can be found in Sharon Saye’s Off the Shelf blog on Wednesday morning.

“Like so many other things we are doing we will look for safe guidance and if there is a surge we will change what we are doing,” Wetmore said.

It’s been slightly more than a year since the library was open to the public which is also roughly the same amount of time since awards, presentations and proclamations have been a regular part of Council meetings.

That’s something Mayor Andy Lang would like to see change soon.

“I’d like to see us getting to where maybe allowing some proclamations to be read,” Lang said. “I think we can ask whoever is asking for something like that to limit it to a few people to attend to represent the group.”
