Your discarded footwear can help area residents – and area pets – this coming winter. Through Nov. 5, the Humane Society of Harrison County is hosting “Shoes for Paws,” a fundraiser which is easy to participate in and will yield big results, said Frankie Michelle Dennison, humane society executive director.

“The collection can include any type of shoe from sneakers to dress shoes to winter boots, which will be checked over and then other organizations will help distribute them to people in need,” she said. “Our humane society will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected and those funds will help to care for the dogs and cats that come through our shelter.”

Specifically, the funds will pay for veterinary care, including vaccines, worming and x-rays, as well as spaying, neutering and other services, Dennison said.

The project is a joint venture between the HSHC, Funds2Orgs and WoofTrax. On a national basis, the WoofTrax Shoes for Shelters & Rescues spring shoe drive raised more than $125,000 for participating animal organizations. Participating organizations can raise up to $1,000, which can go a long way, Dennison said.

She asks residents to challenge their churches, neighborhoods and civic groups and clubs to take part in the “Shoes for Paws” fundraiser.

“Together we can help you clean out your closet and help animals – and other humans,” she said.

New or gently-worn shoes can be dropped off at the at WDTV  on Lodgeville Road in Bridgeport, the Harrison County Humane Society at 2450 Saltwell Road or the HCHS thrift store at 224 Milford Street, Stealey. Questions can be directed at 304-592-1600.

This is the first time HCHS has participated in the project, Dennison said.

"We hope that we get a good response this time, so hopefully we can do another run in the spring - about the time people are doing their spring cleaning," she said.

For those who subscribe to the WoofTrax app, there is another way so support the humane society through the organization.
"WoofTrax is such an easy way for dog walkers to help us raise money,” Dennison said. "Those miles add up which in turn help donate by doing something you are already doing."

The free app can be obtained at www.wooftrax.com or through Google Play on a smart phone.

“Walking is not only a great stress reliever, but it is a simple and free way to keep both you and your pet healthy,” Dennison said.  “And when you come visit the shelter and walk dogs, make sure to use the app here as well!”
