Firearms, Cash Stolen from Unlocked Vehicles; Police Urge Residents to Secure Property

There has been another series of vehicle break-ins in the city. Bridgeport Police urge residents to keep vehicles locked. It was Christmas weekend when vehicles located in the Lawman Avenue/Olive Street area of Bridgeport were entered into during nighttime hours and items reported stolen.

“(Incidents) have been recorded sporadically since then as people realize items are missing from their vehicles,” said Bridgeport Police Sgt. Mark Rogers. “It appears that people have been focusing on firearms and cash within the vehicles. There have been a couple firearms stolen over the last couple of weeks.”

Under no circumstances, Rogers said, should guns be left in vehicles – unlocked or locked.

“They should be in a safe or on a person and never left in a vehicle overnight,” he said.

Included in the incidents was one at the Olive Garden Apartments on East Olive Street. Rogers believes the older residential area is often targeted because vehicles are left outdoors, not only in driveways, but also along residential streets.

Law enforcement officers cannot stress it enough: Keep all property secured.

“Bridgeport is relatively safe, but people are still preying on those who think it’s ok not to lock up,” Rogers said. “Be cognizant and keep anything important to you locked up. Lock your vehicles, as well as your house and outbuildings.”

Rogers also urges residents to be mindful of their surroundings and to report suspicious activity.

“If you see something or someone out of place, let us know,” Rogers said. “It might help us.”

That suspicious activity could be as simple as a series of footprints in the snow. Residents can call 304-842-8260 7:30 a.m. through 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or simply call 911.
