First Annual Teachers Ball Scheduled for May 22

It might be prom season for the students, but this year the teachers are going to get their groove on as well.  Sarah Moore, a teacher at Liberty High School, is spearheading the efforts for the First Annual Teacher’s Ball.

“The idea came about when a bunch of teachers were talking about prom and how nice it would be for the teachers to have a similar event to look forward to, dress up for and have a night out with colleagues and friends,” said Moore.“After a year of grading, planning and teaching, we figured an evening of dancing, laughing and mingling with peers would be a great way to reward teachers for all their hard work at the end of the year.”

Planning the event around all the Spring activities presented a challenge.  May 22 proved to be the perfect date, as it was on a long weekend with no proms or graduations conflicting.  The event will be at the Bridgeport Conference Center and feature a DJ, prizes, free appetizers, photos and a cash bar.  It is sponsored by the AFT and WVEA but any educator is welcome to attend, regardless of whether they are a member of the organizations.

Teachers are used to never knowing exactly what the day will hold. The same is true for the dance.

“We may have 30 or 300,” said Moore.  “We ultimately decided on the Bridgeport Conference Center with its flexible floor plan, which would allow us to expand the room if needed.”

“Most people remember the old Dougger Dances when they were young.  Because of the nostalgia factor, we booked him as the D.J. for the evening.  Tickets are $20 and are available by contacting Moore at s.m.moore@k12.wv.us

Anyone working with kids is welcome to attend, including principals, cooks, aides, custodians, bus drivers, substitute teachers, and board employees.
