Free West Virginia Women's and Girl's Day at Legislature Open for Registration Now

By Trina Runner on December 09, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Last year, the 134-member state Legislature had just 18 women.  That is the lowest number since 1984, roughly 13%, much lower than the national average.  The decline led Stacy North, chairperson for the WV Women’s Commission to make a plea to the Legislature not to disband the Women’s Commission when considering budget cuts last night.

In an effort to showcase the impact women have in government, the WV Women’s Commission will be hosting Women’s and Girl’s Day at the Legislature on January 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is a valuable experience for West Virginia students, empowering them to bring about change through active citizenship.  Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with individual legislators and visit the House or Senate floor during the legislative session.  The daylong program will be filled with activities that allow students to develop an awareness about being effective political and civic leaders, discuss topics pertaining to the impact of women, and network with other students and professionals making an impact on the Mountain State.

Girls in grades 7-12 are welcome to attend the free event, which will evaluate current WV laws and policies and encourage collaborative efforts among participants.  Students will begin at the WV Culture Center at the Capitol Complex and then tour the Capitol Building with legislators before attending the sessions of the Senate or House.

The group will enjoy the film, Chosen, over lunch and then have a presentation by guest speakers.  Preregistration is required for the event and can be found at wvde.state.wv.us.
