Groundbreaking Held for City's Indoor Sports and Recreation Complex, Slated for 2020 Opening

By Julie Perine on June 21, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It's been a long time coming, but weather-wise, timing could not have been better. Rain held off just long enough this afternoon for Mayor Andy Lang to say a few words, then join members of City Council, representatives of Omni Associates and
Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc., among other officials, to place shovels in the ground and move the first dirt at the site of the forthcoming indoor sports and recreation
complex.

Lang provided a brief history of the project, sharing that initial planning had begun in 2014 and that residents had indicated desire for such a complex as early as 2000. It's a project very important to the city of Bridgeport and one which residents of the city and region look forward to opening.

"We break ground, not just for a building, but for a master plan facility. City and Council have done a great job, having the foresight to acquire all this land around here, right next to the current outdoor recreation complex, which opened in 2012...," Lang said. "Even though we're just going to build the buildings now this first time, we're allowing for future growth."
...
Including an indoor competitive pool, walk track, basketball courts and ball fields, among other amenities, the complex is slated for a June 2020 opening. See video of today's groundbreaking ceremony below.
